I’m your host, Chloe. In our last episode, we talked about Old Money and New Money. Today, we are going to talk about something that affects all of us every time we go shopping. The topic is: Fast Fashion vs. Slow Fashion. You might see these words in magazines or on social media, but what is the real difference? And how can we talk about our shopping habits in English? In this episode, we’ll explore how our clothes are made, how we buy them, and some essential vocabulary for this topic. Let’s jump right in. Chloe: Let’s start with Fast Fashion. Fast Fashion describes clothing that is produced very quickly and very cheaply. Think about big brands in the mall where new clothes arrive every week. The goal of Fast Fashion is to follow trends. If a celebrity wears a cool jacket today, Fast Fashion brands want to have a similar jacket in their stores by next week. It is affordable and accessible, which is great. However, the quality is often lower, and because it is so cheap, we tend to treat it as "disposable"—meaning we throw it away easily. Key words here are mass-produced, trendy, and affordable. Chloe: Now, let’s look at Slow Fashion. Slow Fashion is the opposite movement. It focuses on quality rather than speed. When you buy Slow Fashion, you are usually buying pieces that are made to last a long time. The materials are better, and the workers are often treated more fairly. The mindset of Slow Fashion is "quality over quantity." Instead of buying five cheap T-shirts that might lose their shape after one wash, you buy one high-quality T-shirt that lasts for years. It encourages us to slow down and really think before we buy. Key words here are sustainable, durable, and conscious. Chloe: Why does this matter? Well, more people are becoming aware of the environment. Moving toward Slow Fashion doesn't mean you can never buy cheap clothes. It just means being more mindful—thinking about why we are buying something. Chloe: Now, let’s move to our Vocabulary Corner. Here are five useful words and phrases to help you discuss shopping and fashion. 1. Mass-produced This means making a large amount of a product using machines in a factory. Example: "Fast fashion clothes are usually mass-produced to keep costs low." 2. Impulse buy This is a noun. It refers to something you buy suddenly without planning, usually because you see it and just want it in that moment. Example: "That jacket was an impulse buy, and I’ve actually never worn it." 3. Sustainable This is a very popular word now. It means causing little or no damage to the environment and therefore able to continue for a long time. Example: "She is trying to build a more sustainable wardrobe by buying second-hand clothes." 4. Durable This describes something that stays in good condition for a long time, even if you use it a lot. Example: "Leather boots are usually more durable than canvas shoes." 5. Wardrobe staple A "staple" is a main or important part of something. A "wardrobe staple" is a basic piece of clothing that you wear all the time, like a white shirt or blue jeans.
