Episode 50: PRACTICAL STEPS TO RECOGNIZE AND RESOLVE EMOTIONAL TRIGGERING

from The Survivor's Guide to Life · host Peter M. Bernstein, Phd

Emotional triggering brings up pain from the past which clouds our perspective. Triggering prevents us from relating and responding appropriately in the present to the people we care for. Developing an awareness of when we've been triggered by sensing internal changes in our "felt state", slowing down and returning to the present are constructive steps which can be learned and practiced. Resolving emotional triggering involves being gentle with ourselves, refusing to deny or resist our triggerings, getting curious about what triggers us and exploring our emotions and histories of painful or traumatic experiences. We can learn to respond positively rather than react negatively.
