Episode 52 - DIY Projects

from Ditch The Store · host CJ Steedman

DIY Projects Living a self-sufficient lifestyle means recognizing that every dollar saved is a dollar you don't need to earn. It's simple math: the less you spend, the less you have to make. Yet, many people overlook this concept and continue to spend unnecessarily on things they could easily do themselves. That's why I'm a big fan of DIY projects. Here on the farm, there are plenty of tasks we could pay someone else to do, but my partner and I have figured out how to tackle them ourselves. By doing so, we save money that can be put towards essential expenses or investments that require specialized expertise. It's all about maximizing the value of every dollar earned on the farm. When we reduce off-farm expenses, the money we make here can stretch much further, allowing us to focus on what truly matters and invest in areas where our skills or time are better utilized. Learning Basic Carpentry, Plumbing, and Electrical Skills for Home Repairs - Discussing essential tools and safety precautions for DIY home maintenance. - Sharing beginner-friendly carpentry projects such as building raised beds or small shelters. - Providing tips for common plumbing and electrical issues encountered on the farm. Building and Repairing Fences, Gates, and Animal Shelters - Discussing different types of fencing materials and their suitability for various livestock. - Sharing tips for maintaining sturdy gates that can withstand weather and animal pressure. - Exploring cost-effective ways to repurpose materials for shelter construction, such as using reclaimed wood or metal. Setting up Irrigation Systems - gravity feed tanks, pumps and catchment systems - excavating ground to catch water. - Sharing DIY irrigation solutions using recycled materials or rainwater harvesting techniques.
