Episode 52: FIRST RESPONDERS NEED SELF-CARE TO PREVENT BECOMING CASUALTIES THEMSELVES

from The Survivor's Guide to Life · host Peter M. Bernstein, Phd

First responders - EMTs, firefighters, and law enforcement - are exposed to stress and trauma as a regular part of their jobs. The impact of their work can lead to post-traumatic stress. Clinical approaches for their PTS, treating it as a disease or disorder, are not the answer. A full-spectrum approach is needed, including relief and recovery from both the emotional and physical fallout of experienced trauma. Aspects of self-care must take place on physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual levels. Empathetic and objective peer support can also be of value.
