On November 1st, 1861, McClellan seemingly enjoyed a moment of unmatched triumph. He accepted the position of General-in-Chief of the United States Army. Behind this lay a great deal of hard work managing the Army of the Potomac. Yet also, his road had been smoothed, not with battlefield glory, but political machinations.
