Episode 52: Trauma and Symptom Picture with Karen Runacres
from Homeopathy 247 Podcast · host Homeopathy247
Can our emotional experiences become an important part of understanding our physical symptoms? In this episode of the Homeopathy247 Podcast, Mary Greensmith speaks with experienced homeopath Karen Runacres about trauma, emotional wellbeing and the whole person approach she has developed during more than 20 years in practice. Karen explains why she looks beyond the symptom someone arrives with and explores what was happening in their life before it appeared. Looking Beyond the Physical Symptom A person may arrive with eczema, sleep problems, pain or another physical complaint. But Karen's questions go much further. When did it begin? What was happening at the time? How were you feeling? What had changed in your relationships, family or wider life? For Karen, these questions help create a much more individualized picture. Why the Same Experience Affects People Differently Karen explains that even when two people experience the same event, their reactions can be completely different. One person may become anxious, another may withdraw and another may experience no obvious emotional difficulty at all. She believes this individuality is one of the reasons homeopathic prescribing should consider the person's complete history rather than matching one remedy to one diagnosis. What Do We Mean by Trauma? Trauma does not always have to mean one dramatic event. Karen describes experiences including grief, family relationships, divorce and difficult childhood experiences that became important when exploring clients' histories. She also shares her own realization that the arrival of her younger sister affected her more deeply than she understood at the time. The important point is not that a particular experience automatically causes illness, but that people's emotional responses can become relevant to understanding their overall wellbeing. Helping Clients Join the Dots Karen shares a case involving a woman with eczema beneath her eye. After struggling to understand the case, Karen asked a different question: "What is it you don't want to see?" The question opened up a much deeper personal story. For Karen, questions like these can sometimes help people recognise feelings and experiences they had previously avoided discussing. One Symptom, Many Possible Stories Karen gives the example of grief. Ten people experiencing grief could respond in ten different ways because their personalities, histories, relationships and circumstances are different. Likewise, ten people presenting with eczema may have completely different health stories. This is where individualized medicine becomes central to her approach. Exploring Metaphysical Anatomy Karen also discusses Metaphysical Anatomy by Yvette Rose. She uses the framework to explore possible emotional themes associated with particular physical complaints and to generate questions during consultations. Specific claims that emotions such as resentment directly cause arthritis, eczema, thyroid disease or sleep disorders are not medically established. These associations are best understood as prompts for personal reflection rather than diagnostic explanations for disease. Understanding Your Own Patterns A major theme of the conversation is self awareness. Karen explains that once people begin recognising their own emotional reactions, recurring patterns can become easier to notice. The aim is not to blame emotions for illness, but to understand the person more fully and recognise when emotional support may also be helpful. Physical and Emotional Health Together Emotional stress and trauma can affect wellbeing, sleep and mental health, but physical symptoms can also have medical causes that need investigation. Persistent eczema, arthritis, thyroid symptoms, significant sleep problems or other ongoing concerns should receive appropriate medical assessment. Homeopathy should complement rather than delay necessary healthcare. Key Takeaways Karen looks at physical and emotional symptoms together. Asking when a symptom began can reveal important context. People can respond very differently to similar experiences. Trauma can include many different kinds of difficult experiences. Homeopathic prescribing is individualized rather than diagnosis based. Karen uses Metaphysical Anatomy as a personal reflection tool. Specific emotion to disease mappings are not scientifically established. Understanding emotional patterns may support greater self awareness. Persistent physical or mental health symptoms deserve appropriate professional care.
