Episode #53: It’s been an eye-opening experience! with Dr. Arpita Gupta DePalma & Dr. Susan Vogler
Tune in to hear how Dr. Susan Vogler, an OB/GYN, has sought to navigate non-clinical opportunities over the past year, following an orthopedic surgery, and Dr. Arpita Gupta DePalma, pediatrician, shares what she has learned, having pivoted from clinical work a while back. Arpita discusses valuable lessons she learned as part of her own personal transformation after working 80-hour weeks in an administrative capacity at her physician husband’s practice, “I was overworking as a way of avoiding those negative emotions that I was feeling about my worth and my value…” and how it affected her relationships and interactions at work and home. Arpita shares the analogy of living in a fishbowl and says, “Until we do something a little different, or jump out of the fishbowl to see what the true normal is, you can be stuck!” Susan says that she started to investigate things she could do with her medical background and degree a couple of years ahead of her pivot. She attended the SEAK (Skills, Education, Abilities, & Knowledge) conference in Chicago, and adds that she has been ok with some uncertainty, “Where I land is where I’m supposed to be!” “Learning and growing throughout your career is so important; I’m forward thinking, I’m optimistic!” Susan and Arpita’s parting words of advice include, “Just keep fighting!” and “Listen to your inner voice!”
