Episode 54: Homeopathy First Aid Prescribing with Susie Cornally Bale

from Homeopathy 247 Podcast · host Homeopathy247

Which remedies are worth keeping close by when you're travelling, playing sport or simply dealing with everyday family mishaps? In this episode of the Homeopathy247 Podcast, Mary Greensmith speaks with homeopath Susie Cornally Bale about the remedies she keeps in her own family first aid kits. From bumps and bruises to insect bites, sprains and digestive upsets, Susie shares some of the remedy pictures she has found most useful to learn. Building a Family Remedy Kit Susie rarely goes anywhere without a small remedy kit. Rather than carrying every remedy she owns, she thinks about the situations her family is most likely to encounter and builds her kit around those needs. For her active family, that often means having remedies traditionally associated with injuries, sports, bites and stings. Ledum and Puncture Wounds One of the first remedies Susie discusses is Ledum palustre. Within traditional homeopathic materia medica, Ledum is commonly associated with puncture wounds and bites. Susie discusses ticks, thorns and other situations where the skin has been pierced. A tick bite should not be relied upon as something homeopathy can prevent from developing into Lyme disease. Anyone concerned about a tick bite, expanding rash or symptoms of Lyme disease should seek appropriate medical advice. Puncture wounds may also require tetanus assessment. Apis for Redness and Swelling Susie compares Ledum with Apis mellifica. In traditional homeopathic prescribing, she associates Apis more with redness, heat, itching and swelling. She discusses examples involving insect bites and swollen skin. Any swelling of the tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, faintness or suspected anaphylaxis is a medical emergency. Epinephrine should be used promptly when prescribed, and emergency medical help should be sought immediately. Arnica for Bumps and Bruises No family first aid discussion would be complete without Arnica. Susie talks about using Arnica traditionally after bumps, bruises and physical trauma, including the kinds of knocks that come with children's sports. She and Mary also discuss its traditional use around recovery from procedures. Serious head injuries, fractures, severe pain or significant trauma require proper medical assessment regardless of any complementary remedies being used. Sprains and Strains For strains and sprains, Susie discusses Rhus tox and Ruta. She describes how the details of the injury and the tissues involved can help differentiate between remedies within homeopathic materia medica. This is a good example of why learning individual remedy pictures matters rather than simply choosing one remedy for every sports injury. Hypericum and Calendula Susie also talks about Hypericum, traditionally associated with injuries to nerve rich areas such as fingers, and Calendula, often discussed in homeopathic first aid around superficial wounds and skin healing. Deep cuts, heavily contaminated wounds, loss of sensation or movement, uncontrolled bleeding and suspected infection need appropriate medical treatment. Digestive Upsets While Travelling Another common reason Susie reaches for her kit is digestive trouble while travelling. She discusses Nux vomica and Arsenicum album within their traditional homeopathic pictures for nausea, vomiting and digestive upset. Severe food poisoning, persistent vomiting, blood in the stool, high fever or signs of dehydration require medical attention. Choosing Remedies From the Symptoms One of the most useful homeopathy basics in this conversation is that the same situation may still lead to different remedies. Susie compares details such as red versus bluish skin, hot versus cold sensations and the type of injury involved. The more clearly you can observe the symptoms, the easier it becomes to understand why one traditional remedy picture may fit better than another. Key Takeaways Build your kit around the situations your family commonly encounters. Arnica is traditionally associated with bumps and bruises. Ledum is commonly discussed for puncture wound pictures. Apis is associated traditionally with redness, heat and swelling. Rhus tox and Ruta are commonly studied for different injury pictures. Hypericum and Calendula are useful remedies to learn within homeopathic first aid. Nux vomica and Arsenicum album are common remedies to study for digestive upsets. Homeopathy should never delay emergency or necessary medical treatment.
