Episode 56: Lumea Prostate Biopsy System

Lais Heideman, BSN, RN, CURN will discuss the Lumea Prostate Biopsy System. Traditional biopsy of a lesion, places the tissue into a bottle full of a preservative called formalin to fix it. The tissues free floats in the bottle losing track of which end of the tissue is which. Tissue orientation is where the proximal and distal (near and far) ends of the tissue are in relationship to the biopsied organ. The inability to preserve orientation means that a physician cannot accurately map a fusion MRI-biospy, flawing potential treatment plans.  The Lumea Prostate Biopsy System allows medical personnel to place tissue samples on special hydrophilic formalin-soaked sponges within the BxBoards.
