Episode 57: Human Design Concepts and Burnout with Stephanie Thullen

from Homeopathy 247 Podcast · host Homeopathy247

Are you genuinely short of energy, or are you spending too much of it doing things that don't feel right for you? In this episode of the Homeopathy247 Podcast, Mary Greensmith welcomes back homeopath and Human Design practitioner Stephanie Thullen for a conversation about burnout, energy and learning to recognise your own limits. Stephanie explores how Human Design interprets different energy types, why she believes some people may need considerably more rest than others and how becoming aware of your natural patterns may encourage better self care. Recognising Burnout Stephanie describes her own experience of feeling fatigued, struggling with concentration, avoiding certain activities and feeling generally depleted. It wasn't until she began studying Human Design that she started viewing those experiences through the lens of burnout. Fatigue and poor concentration can have many physical and psychological causes, so persistent or severe symptoms deserve appropriate professional assessment rather than automatically being attributed to burnout or Human Design. Are You Living Against Yourself? Within Human Design, Stephanie describes burnout as something that may happen when a person repeatedly behaves in ways that don't fit their supposed natural energy pattern. She talks about the pressure to work harder, say yes, keep going and meet other people's expectations even when your body is telling you that you need something different. Human Design is a spiritual and self-development framework rather than a scientifically validated explanation for burnout or illness. Why Projectors May Need More Rest One of the main Human Design types discussed is the Projector. Within the Human Design system, Projectors are considered "non-sacral" types, meaning their energy is described as more variable than that of Generators and Manifesting Generators. Stephanie believes Projectors can therefore become particularly depleted when they try to maintain the same pace as people who appear to have more consistent energy. Projector Human Design and Invitations Stephanie also revisits one of the best known Projector concepts: waiting for recognition and invitation. Projectors are traditionally described as people who can see other people's potential and naturally want to offer advice or guidance. But when that advice hasn't been invited, Stephanie says Projectors may feel rejected, ignored or frustrated. She encourages Projectors to experiment with waiting until their contribution is genuinely wanted. Doing Things From Obligation Burnout isn't only about work. Stephanie gives the simple example of being asked to help someone when your immediate reaction is that you really don't have the energy. Saying yes anyway because you don't want to disappoint them may leave you feeling even more depleted. For her, learning to notice that initial response is an important step towards understanding personal boundaries. Learning to Say No Stephanie isn't suggesting that we should only ever do things we enjoy. There will always be responsibilities that need attention. Instead, she encourages people to notice the difference between consciously choosing to do something and repeatedly agreeing to things purely through guilt, obligation or people pleasing. Human Design as an Experiment A phrase Stephanie returns to throughout the conversation is that Human Design should be treated as an experiment. Rather than accepting everything unquestioningly, she encourages people to try different approaches and notice what actually helps them. Take what feels useful, test it in everyday life and leave behind what doesn't fit. Human Design and Homeopathy Stephanie also discusses potentially combining Human Design with her homeopathic work. She sees Human Design as one way of exploring patterns and homeopathy as another individualized approach she may use alongside it. Neither Human Design nor homeopathy has been established as a treatment for clinical burnout, depression, anxiety disorders or other medical conditions. Key Takeaways Burnout can look different from person to person. Human Design describes different types as having different energy patterns. Projectors are traditionally considered more sensitive to energy demands. Rest is an important theme in the Projector Human Design framework. Waiting for recognition and invitation is a central Projector concept. People pleasing and continually saying yes may leave some people feeling depleted. Stephanie encourages people to experiment rather than blindly follow Human Design rules. Human Design is not a scientifically validated health or psychological assessment. Persistent exhaustion or mental health symptoms deserve appropriate professional support.
