Episode 58 - Festen *Listener's Choice*
from In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil · host Andrew and Phil
In this Danish film, a large gathering is taking place at a fancy rural estate. It is a celebration for the 60th birthday of Helge, the well-off patriarch and his family and friends. His children are Christian, a somewhat pensive young man who runs a restaurant in Paris, Helene, an anthropologist with a dark sense of humor, and Michael, who is trying to live up to his father's expectations and runs a bar in a seedy part of Copenhagen. At first, the proceedings seem farcical, with various guests arriving at the estate and getting into mischief. But it soon becomes clear that what is on Christian's mind is something very disturbing, indeed. During his toast at the birthday party, Christian reveals he has written two speeches and asks his father which speech he would like to hear: the yellow one or the green one. The father chooses green. What results is an intense evening for all parties concerned. Jeff joins the discussion for this episode about his request: "Festen" (The Celebration).
