Episode 59: Farah Merani - Representation In The Media
from The Human Beauty Movement Podcast · host The Human Beauty Movement
Representation matters. For those of us who grew up not seeing ourselves reflected favorably on screens, it's refreshing to see things changing. Here to talk about her own experience as a South Asian Muslim actor is Farah Merani. Farah is a classically trained actor and creator, based between LA and Toronto who has performed on stage and on screen across North America, Europe, and Russia. She has appeared in AppleTV’s “SEE” and NBC-TV’s “Quantum Leap,” Shadowhunters, and Nikita. Farah has lived in 6 different countries on three continents, speaks 4 languages, and is dedicated to sharing the stories of her family, community, and ancestors. In this episode, we talk about how Farah followed her heart (against her family's desire) to become an actor, fitting in and feeling othered, her evolving perception of her own beauty, her view of diversity and inclusivity in the media, and how she brings her full cultural identity to the roles she plays.
