Episode 6: Moving Past Stereotypes: An Interview With A Trans Man

from First Do No Harm · host Jami Fregeau

"We are all humans. We all have a human experience, you know it's important to stop drinking our own juice and listen and validate other peoples' experiences." -Renfield A patient sparked the interest in this topic when I witnessed a transgender woman in a hospital who treated the staff, especially her nurse horribly. When the nurse was talking about the abuse she was receiving from this patient she still referred to the patient with her chosen name and pronoun preference. I was so amazed at this nurse and the capacity and respect she had to not lash back in madness, but to continue to treat this person as a human being she cared for. Is this the norm in healthcare? I sat and interviewed with a great Transgender man, Renfield. He so graciously took the time to share with us his life and the struggles he went through prior to choosing to make the transition, his family's response, medical care, therapy, his experience of privilege and treatment as a man versus when he was a female, and most importantly his hope in human kind. This podcast includes profanity. Thankfully, the transgender community has its own suicide hotline courtesy of Trans Lifeline. US: (877) 565-8860 CANADA: (877) 330-6366
