Summary
The nocebo effect refers to new or worsening symptoms that develop in response to negative health-related information, beliefs, and/or experiences. When dealing with concussion patients in both the acute and chronic phase, it's important that we, as healthcare professionals, speak to our patients in a way that reduces the risks of the nocebo effect. In this podcast, we discuss the evidence surrounding the nocebo effect in various clinical trials, RCTs, as well as in the concussion literature. We also talk about societal nocebos and how the media and public perception may influence how your patients present and things to consider throughout your management of concussion patients.
