Episode 63 - Matthew 9:35-38 - Compassion and the Harvest

Scripture: Matthew 9:35–38 (ESV) 35 And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” Episode Summary In this episode, we pause with Matthew at a turning point in Jesus’ ministry. After chapters filled with healing, teaching, and restoration, Matthew offers a summary that reveals not just what Jesus does, but why He does it. Jesus looks at the crowds and responds not with frustration or distance, but with deep compassion. He sees people who are harassed, helpless, and longing for guidance. From that compassion flows His invitation to prayer, partnership, and participation in God’s work. This passage prepares us for what comes next as Jesus sends His disciples out to join Him in the harvest.
