In 1971, a New York artist named Donald Judd got tired of watching his work get sold, resold, and reinstalled by other people's judgment — so he left the entire New York art system behind and found a ranch town in the far West Texas desert. He spent the rest of his life building permanent installations there on one rule: the art stays exactly where he put it. Today it draws tens of thousands of visitors a year to a town of under two thousand people.
