My longtime friend Jeff Barry – VP Marketing for Kent Cartridge recently met me in the Texas Panhandle for a couple days of sandhill crane hunting. We discuss that experience and whether it exceeding his expectations. Also, what loads did we use and how effective were they at dropping birds as big as sandhill cranes? Does it make sense that we can shoot lead at cranes but have to shoot non toxic for geese in the exact same field? Also, there seems to be mounting pressure from not only the anti hunting tree hugger faction, but also from within our own ranks (thanks BHA) for hunters to switch to non toxic shot for all hunting practices. We explain why this ideal is not only misguided from a conservation standpoint, but also what impact it would have on the consumer at the end of the day. Next, one of the women I respect most in the outdoor industry joins the conversation. Jordan Budd of Running Water Hunting in Northwest Nebraska has earned her stripes as a videographer, guide, writer and hunter. I recently traveled to her family cattle ranch to hunt whitetail deer during the Nebraska muzzlelaoder season. We discuss the diverse terrain and the animals you can expect to see on their 7,500 acre farm. Then we spend some time reliving her recent Alaskan Dall Sheep hunt in the famed Brooks Range. Bucket list stuff for many of us! (Jordan and I taping the podcast at the rustic family farmhouse hunters stay in)
