Episode 66 - Sneakers *Listener's Choice*
from In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil · host Andrew and Phil
Being sneaky isn't such a bad thing when you're one of the good guys. In this case you've got a collection of heavyweight actors (plus Dan Aykroyd) who are a group of intelligence/hacker misfits from various backgrounds who all work together under the leadership of Martin Bishop (Robert Redford). Their job is to test the security of various organizations by breaking in and then reporting the ease with which they do so to their eager clients. It's legit work, but the 'sneakers' also do some dabbling in hacking and infiltration on the side. A pair of government agents offer to pay Bishop a handsome sum of money in exchange for stealing a valuable "black box" from a brilliant mathematician. But things are not what they seem...and some people are turning up dead. "Sneakers" is a top-notch thriller that soars from the strength of its formidable cast, and it's smart, upbeat sense of humor throughout. For Andrew and special guest, Kristy, it's also one of their favorite movies. Phil hadn't seen the film in 22 years! The projection on the future of power distribution and importance of computers was pretty forward-thinking in 1992. It's worth seeing alone for how hacking is portrayed back in a more innocent time when computers were not as ubiquitous as they are now. Yes, kiddos, once upon a time you couldn't take photos and buy stuff or even leave the house with your telephone.
