Episode 68: Homeopathy for Teeth with Glythyn Sprengel
from Homeopathy 247 Podcast · host Homeopathy247
Can homeopathy have a place alongside regular dental care? In this episode of the Homeopathy247 Podcast, Mary Greensmith speaks with homeopath Glythyn Sprengel, whose practice has developed a strong focus on teeth and dental health. Glythyn shares what she has learned from running the Homeopathy for Teeth community, where questions range from children's cavities and injured teeth to abscesses, gum problems, grinding and recovery after dental procedures. Why Focus on Teeth? Glythyn explains that many people don't immediately think about teeth when they think about homeopathy. Yet dental concerns are among the most common questions she now receives. Her Homeopathy for Teeth group grew to around 14,000 members within its first two years, showing just how many families are looking for information about complementary approaches to dental care. Cavities and Children's Teeth One of the biggest topics in the community is tooth decay in children. Glythyn discusses nutrition, mineral intake and cell salts such as Calcarea fluorica and Silicea within her homeopathic approach. She also shares a case where a family reported changes in their child's dental health over several months. Individual case reports cannot establish that homeopathy or cell salts reverse cavities. Early enamel changes may sometimes be arrested or remineralized with appropriate dental care, but established cavities need professional dental assessment and may require treatment. Dental Abscesses Glythyn also receives many questions about abscesses in both children and adults. She mentions remedies traditionally considered in homeopathy, including Hepar sulphuris, Silicea and Mercurius. A dental abscess is an infection and should be assessed promptly by a dentist. Homeopathy should not replace drainage, root canal treatment, extraction or antibiotics when these are clinically necessary. Facial swelling, fever, difficulty swallowing or breathing requires urgent medical attention. Injured Teeth Falls and damaged front teeth are another common concern, particularly with children. Homeopathic remedies may be part of someone's complementary approach, but dental trauma can damage the tooth, root or surrounding bone even when the injury looks minor. A knocked, broken or displaced tooth should therefore receive prompt dental assessment. Before and After Dental Treatment Glythyn also talks about using homeopathy around dental procedures. She describes using Aconite for her own anxiety before treatment and Arnica and Hypericum after extractions. These remedies are traditionally associated with fear, physical trauma and nerve type pain in homeopathic materia medica. Homeopathy has not been established as a replacement for appropriate pain relief, infection treatment or postoperative dental care. Individualized Prescribing One of Glythyn's strongest messages is that the commonly suggested remedy isn't always enough. She shares an example where a parent had already tried remedies mentioned in the group's educational posts but wasn't getting the expected response. After looking at the situation more closely, Glythyn changed the potency. For her, this shows why homeopathic prescribing often becomes more individualized when straightforward home prescribing doesn't seem to fit. Cell Salt Coaching Because cell salt names and potencies can be confusing for beginners, Glythyn and her team also offer coaching sessions. These sessions are designed to help people understand which cell salts are traditionally considered, how they are taken and when professional guidance may be useful. Homeopathy and Your Dentist Glythyn repeatedly encourages people to continue seeing a dentist. Knowing what is actually happening with the tooth makes it easier to make informed decisions and avoids guessing about problems that may need professional treatment. Homeopathy can be explored as a complementary practice, but it should not delay necessary dental diagnosis or treatment. Key Takeaways Glythyn's practice has developed a strong focus on teeth. Children's cavities are one of the most common concerns in her community. Dental abscesses and injured teeth need professional dental assessment. Cell salts are discussed within traditional homeopathic practice. Remedies such as Arnica, Hypericum and Aconite may be considered around dental procedures. Homeopathic prescribing may become more individualized when common suggestions don't fit. Case reports cannot prove that homeopathy reverses tooth decay or treats infection. Regular dental care remains essential.
