Episode 68 - Joe *Listener's Choice*
from In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil · host Andrew and Phil
What a podcast we have for you this time! Gary Hawkins, screenwriter extraordinaire sits in on the discussion with Andrew and Phil to dish about "Joe", directed by David Gordon Green. The film is about the titular character (Nicolas Cage), an ex-con trying to get straight. He has a hardscrabble job poisoning trees for later destruction and this is how he meets Gary (Tye Sheridan) a 15 year old looking for work. Turns out Gary's dad is a real evil twist; he'll kill for alcohol and steals money from his hard-working son. The more Joe and Gary work together, the closer they become, despite the ominous presence of violence from Gary's dad and others. Joe wants to do the right thing, but he's in a world where that's difficult. This is a gritty film, and Gary tells many fascinating stories about it's genesis. He also talks to Phil and Andrew about his days teaching at film school and mentoring up and coming directors, how Nicolas Cage likes to shoot his sex scenes, and the tragic fate of the most incredible actor in the picture.
