You avoid the relationship by avoiding the person and never getting involved in the first place. You must have eyes to see and be willing to accept the truth for what it is. Brokenness leads to blindiness, which has caused millions of people to end up in relationships with people who are no good for them. There are always signs and red flags that people miss or choose to ignore, only to find themselves in abusive relationships that they're afraid to be in and are afraid to leave!
