Episode 7: Dealing With Strict Parents and How to Break the Toxic Cycle

from No Boundaries: Black Girl Magic Edition with Anousha Nzume · host Anousha Nzume

Hot Take: Ultra strict parenting styles do not work. So why do some parents still swear by them? They think that by isolating their kids and imposing restrictive rules on their teens that they’re protecting them. But it turns out that these parents are doing more harm than good. Take this week’s guest is Nayelli. Nayelli has been friends with our co-host Lulu  since they were sixteen. Lulu saw how restrictive Nayelli’s parents were and tried to help her feel like a normal teenager. They’d go out and get food, go to parties, and occasionally drink for a bit of fun. And that helped for a while, but it wasn’t until Nayelli had one too many blow ups with her mom that she decided she needed to break this toxic cycle. In this week’s episode, Nayelli shares why she felt like she had to leave her home and how that affected her relationship with her family. When the screaming, the insults, and the restrictive behavior were too much to bear, Nayelli started making plans to move out. To some, that sounds like a normal reaction to how she was being treated. But in a strict family home, that’s the most insulting thing you can do. Tune into this week’s episode to hear how Nayelli moved out and what happened after the dust settled. Enjoy!
