Episode 7- Will later opening hours save the night time economy?

from M1 Podcast

Rush based comedian Steve Cummins discusses his career in comedy and the night time economy. In this episode, we interview Comedian and MC at the Laughter Lounge Steve Cummins. As someone who has been making his living from the night time economy, we get Steve’s take on how things are. In 2000, there were over 500 night clubs in Ireland and today there are less than 80, while the number of pubs has dropped off in the number of thousands. Social habits have changed with people drinking less and going out less. The Irish pub is renowned around the world, yet it closing its doors in Ireland. The Sale of Alcohol Bill, if passed this year, will mean pubs staying open later and night clubs possibly staying open till 6am. There is opposition to this proposal with some believing that it will lead to law and order problems or that it will encourage alcoholism. Can our towns, cities and villages be re imagined with both regeneration during the day but also with a vibrant night time economy? Listen in to our discussion.
