Episode 70 - The Villain *Listener's Choice*
from In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil · host Andrew and Phil
This film is a turd. Kirk Douglas tries his hardest to enliven the proceedings of this comic Western from 1979. The whole film is an attempt to replicate the humor and feel of classic Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote cartoons. So you've got Douglas (surprisingly nimble for age 63) as Cactus Jack constantly getting his ass handed to him by his foiled attempts at robbing wealthy frontier woman Charming Jones (Ann-Margret) and wayward Austrian cowboy Handsome Stranger (Arnold Schwarzenegger). The bulk of this lame-fest is a long chase scene where Charming and Handsome escape Indians and titular villain, (none other than) Cactus Jack. The film is directed by Hal Needham, who had just directed "Smokey and the Bandit" and would later helm "Cannonball Run." Hal likes his chase movies. "The Villain" is dreadfully bad and comes recommended by Monte. He and Andrew are cheesed off by this epic fail of a film and gleefully skewer it in this discussion. Phil doesn't have much in the way of kind things to say about this recommendation, although it is the kind of film that is perhaps fun to dissect, if you are a film studies major.
