Episode 72: How Homeopathy Helps Chronic Disease with Paula Webb

from Homeopathy 247 Podcast · host Homeopathy247

Living with a chronic condition can mean managing many symptoms at the same time, especially when the autonomic nervous system is involved. In this episode of the Homeopathy247 Podcast, Mary Greensmith welcomes back Paula Webb to discuss her particular interest in POTS, or Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, including people experiencing POTS like symptoms alongside long COVID. Paula explains how she approaches complex cases, why she asks about symptoms throughout the whole body and what she has learned from working with people whose health has changed dramatically. What Is POTS? POTS is a form of dysautonomia involving an abnormal increase in heart rate when moving into an upright position. People may experience symptoms such as dizziness, palpitations, fatigue, exercise intolerance, brain fog, headaches, digestive problems and difficulty tolerating heat. Paula explains that the condition can affect many areas because the autonomic nervous system is involved in functions including heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, temperature regulation and sweating. POTS and Long COVID Paula has seen increasing numbers of people experiencing autonomic symptoms following viral illness, including COVID. Post viral autonomic problems are recognized, and POTS has been reported as one possible condition following COVID. However, symptoms such as dizziness, racing heart and severe fatigue can have several possible causes, so appropriate medical assessment remains important. Looking Beyond the Diagnosis Paula explains that her homeopathic consultations aren't based solely on the label "POTS." She asks about the person's complete experience. When did everything change? What happens when they stand? How does heat affect them? Have their digestion, periods, sweating or sleep changed? Are there headaches, tingling sensations or unusual thirst? For Paula, these details form the individualized picture used in homeopathic prescribing. Why Every Case Can Look Different Two people with the same diagnosis may experience it very differently. One may struggle primarily with dizziness and heart rate changes, while another may also experience digestive problems, headaches, menstrual symptoms, allergies or severe fatigue. Paula believes those differences are important when deciding how she approaches each case. Chronic Illness and Medication Paula discusses people who come to her at very different stages. Some already take medication for POTS, while others are exploring different forms of support. Conventional treatments for POTS can include lifestyle strategies and medications chosen according to the person's symptoms and physiology. These treatments should not be described simply as "suppressing" illness, and prescribed medication should not be stopped or changed without the clinician managing the condition. A Post Viral POTS Case Paula shares the story of a young athlete who developed significant symptoms following COVID. She describes dizziness, exercise intolerance, fatigue, headaches, visual problems, digestive changes, heat intolerance and changes in sweating. Paula reports that the client gradually returned to exercise after receiving individualized homeopathic care and later experienced some recurrence of symptoms following another viral illness. This is an individual case report and cannot establish that the homeopathic remedy caused the improvement. A More Longstanding Case Paula also describes working with a woman whose health problems had become severe enough that she was using a wheelchair. The case included fainting, constipation, headaches, rapid heart rate, painful periods and difficulty remaining upright. Paula reports substantial improvements during her homeopathic care, including increased mobility. Again, this represents the practitioner's account of one person's experience rather than evidence that homeopathy can cure POTS or restore mobility. Why Detailed Case Taking Matters Paula describes homeopathic consultations as detective work. She says the prescription can only be as good as the information available, which is why seemingly small details may become important. People are often accustomed to answering direct medical questions, whereas a homeopathic consultation may ask them to describe sensations and changes they hadn't previously considered. Chronic Disease Self Management Managing a chronic condition can involve learning your triggers, pacing activities, maintaining appropriate hydration and nutrition, following prescribed treatment and understanding when symptoms require additional medical help. For people with POTS, individualized management may also involve clinicians with expertise in autonomic disorders. Homeopathy has not been established as an effective treatment for POTS, long COVID or dysautonomia and should not replace appropriate medical management. Key Takeaways POTS is a recognized form of autonomic dysfunction. Long COVID can include autonomic symptoms in some people. Symptoms can involve much more than heart rate alone. Paula takes a highly individualized approach to case taking. She considers physical, emotional and lifestyle details. Two people with POTS may have very different symptom patterns. Paula shares two client experiences from her practice. Individual cases cannot prove that homeopathy treated the underlying condition. Prescribed POTS medication should not be stopped without medical guidance. Chronic conditions often require ongoing, individualized management.
