Episode 74: The One Where She Riffs About Being "Too Sensitive"

from Unraveled & Unwritten

"Why are you so upset?""Don't be so emotional!""You're too sensitive!"If any of these statements sound familiar, you may want to listen to this episode.I've often been labeled as "overly sensitive," "too sensitive," "overly emotional...." - and it hasn't been a compliment!Being sensitive and shedding tears was something I felt ashamed and embarrassed of!But I had a realization recently as I helped my son process a recent loss: being sad, or expressing emotion about something that moves and touches you - is NOT a bad thing. It simply means that you care.In a world where I feel like many people are either unwilling to care and feel deeply, are simply numb, and/or don't feel comfortable expressing emotions such as sadness, hurt, grief, joy...I'll happily accept a label of "too sensitive" if it means that I care, feel and love deeply. We should always be who we are. And if you're someone who DOES feel deeply about something - then I encourage you to express that in whatever way feels authentic for you - without any shame, embarrassment or regret.Did you love this episode? Hathaway robbed 30 banks in a single year, all within a 30-mile radius of his suburban home. But that’s not the most surprising part of this story. Before Hathaway was a masterful bank robber—a shape-shifting professional who confounded multiple police departments and the FBI—he was a top design engineer at Boeing, one of America’s most important companies. Hathaway traveled the world in business class, working on the 747, while hiding a gigantic secret: an OxyContin addiction that ultimately unraveled his life. Based on three years of conversations between Hathaway and journalist Josh Dean, Hooked is a different kind of crime story that takes listeners on an exceptional and very personal tour of America’s opioid epidemic.Hooked is an Apple Original podcast, produced by Campside Media.
