Ryan Warhola and I have become good friends over the past handful of years. The former cop, turned off shore fishing captain now runs a multi million dollar industrial company as a result of a relationship forged in the blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The lifelong outdoorsman cut his teeth hunting and fishing in the sleepy coastal community of Winnie, TX. Ryan and I have hunted internationally together, chased ducks on the Texas coast, deer on his lease and I recently took Henry down to his stomping grounds for alligator and teal this past September. Sadly, it wasn’t but a couple weeks after that hunt, that Ryan called me to tell me his hunting season was essentially over. A freak hunting accident had literally left his right ankle completely shredded. We talk about his injury and whether or not he’ll be able to rehabilitate in time for our next African safari this June. We also discuss the absolute thorn in his side as far as big game animals go. It’s well documented that elk hunting is always a wild ride for me, sometimes I’m successful, other times it’s the biggest kick in the sack of all time. However, even in my lowest of low moments chasing September bugles, I can’t relate to Ryan’s elk hunting experiences. It’s not for lack of dedication or trying either. We also mix in some off shore fishing and recipe talk with the veteran captain of over 20 years. We wrap things up with a very uncomfortable situation Ryan and his family experienced after dinner last Friday night. Stay aware and stay strapped! (Wahoo, it’s what’s for dinner!) (Henry, Ryan and I after a successful teal hunt on the Texas coast) (Amazing Kudu bull taken on Ryan’s last safari)
