Episode 77: The Myth Made Fact [Part 1] - Is Jesus Just a Borrowed Myth? with Dr. Louis Markos

from Apologetics Profile · host James Walker and Daniel Ray

This podcast is also available to watch in video format here: www.watchman.org/Markos1You have probably heard skeptics make the claim that Jesus is just a myth, just like all the other dying-and-rising-god myths the ancient world. But is that really true?  Absolutely not, argues our guest this week, Dr. Louis Markos of Houston Baptist University. His latest book The Myth Made Fact, argues that rather than being just another myth, Christianity is the fulfillment of all the great myths of the past. And by myth Dr. Markos does not mean "falsehood," but rather a cultural narrative rooted in the truth of who we are as created in the image of God. If Jesus is not the Savior of the world who died and rose again for the salvation of mankind, the skeptic is hard-pressed to explain why many of the ancient tales contain tinctures of Gospel truth. Why the need for a Savior? A strong man? What has gone wrong with man? Why is life depicted as a cosmic battle between gods and men? The "Proto-Evangelium" Dr. Markos argues, the "First Gospel," ideas of fall and redemption, appear throughout Greek and Roman mythology. And like the early Christians transformed "pagan symbols into Christian iconography," Dr. Markos believes Christians today can and should creatively do the very same thing, using the Gospel as our standard. Following in the footsteps of C.S. Lewis, Dr. Markos believes the stories and mythical tales can serve to help believers show how the truth of the Gospel is indeed the fulfillment of the best myths, it is indeed the greatest story ever told.RELATED LINKS: More information on Dr. Louis Markos and a link to his website and book: The Myth Made Fact by Louis Markos: https://bit.ly/MythMadeFact Myth Made Fact (website, course, PowerPoint, and files): MythMadeFact.com About Dr. Louis Markos: hbu.edu/contact/louis-markos MORE RESOURCES: We are also offering a free subscription to our 4-page bimonthly Profiles here: www.watchman.org/Free.SUPPORT: Help us create more content like this.
