Emily grew up playing a multitude of sports and eventually focused on volleyball earning a scholarship to the University of Hawaii. She was a four-year starter at Hawaii and was named the Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in 2010. She was a Second Team AVCA All-American as a sophomore and a First Team member as a junior and as a senior. In both her junior and senior seasons, Hartong was the Big West Player of the Year and ranked in the top 10 nationally in kills per set. Emily went on to play professional volleyball with her club Voléro Zürich she competed at the 2015 FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship. In 2015–16, she became a member of Hyundai-Hillstate volleyball club, and her team won the Korean Volleyball Pro League Championship. Emily is now retired from her professional career and serves as head of Marketing and Media for League One Volleyball.
