In December 1931, a young pharmacist named Ted Hustead and his wife Dorothy bought the only drugstore in Wall, South Dakota — a town of just over three hundred people — in the depths of the Depression. Business was bad for five straight years. Then, in the summer of 1936, Dorothy had an idea while watching cars pass by without stopping: free ice water for hot, dusty travelers. It worked almost immediately, and never stopped — Wall Drug now pulls in more than two million visitors a year, still run by the same family, three generations later.
