Abbott would lead the Liberal/National coalition to power, defeating a newly-returned Kevin Rudd at the 2013 Federal Election. However Abbott, admittedly one of the most polarising figures in recent Australian political history, would not enjoy a wide base of support among the general population which thus exacerbated the criticism of his missteps and failures.
