Episode 8 - Dallas Buyers Club
from In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil · host Andrew and Phil
Ron Woodroof is a hustlin', hard-living cowboy in 1985. Rock Hudson was recently diagnosed with a new killer disease called HIV and he is the subject of Woodroof's mocking, homophobic vitriol. But it's not long before the frighteningly gaunt Woodroof receives the same diagnosis. Frustrated by the lack of adequate medication for his condition, the afflicted electrician travels to Mexico and finds there is a wealth of remedies just south of the border. Welcome to the Dallas Buyers Club. Matthew McConaughey undergoes the kind of physical transformation that the Academy loves to reward, but he has the acting chops to back it up, too. His portrayal of the emotional, belligerent Woodroof will surely win him the Oscar. Some may doubt that fact, but nearly everyone agrees that Jared Leto is taking home the gold statuette for his magnetic supporting performance as Rayon, a dying transvestite with whom Woodroof strikes a complicated business partnership. Two stunning acting turns in a solidly directed film make "Dallas Buyers Club" a favorite of 2013.
