But now I agree more than he might have just been taking a cigarette break and pausing before the storm, or contemplating what they could have done tactically. Though maybe it was a moment of vulnerability when he and Taylor met each other’s eyes. Or it was just sympathy from Taylor’s end. Well you can say it wasn’t smart of Elias to tell on Barnes but that’s because he didn’t just care about himself the way you’re describing. Which is very understandable and how most of the characters survived! But then you wouldn’t be Elias. You wouldn’t have fought Barnes or stopped him from offing that little girl or others in the village, because even if Elias hadn’t immediately reported him, Barnes told him he was d—d.  Elias wanted to prevent things from getting worse and losing these specific men and others. The higher ups said to torch the village, but if Elias hadn’t been there, they might have torched every individual too, which is worse. And it could happen again if Elias didn’t try to do something more serous to stop Barnes. It was possible there would be more pressure put on Barnes and others to cool it for now. Which would in theory save lives. Stone’s beliefs about alcohol vs pot as I think you note weren’t just ideology so much as what he personally experienced. The Barnes figure he knew did drink alcohol and those who drank were generally more violent than those who smoked.
