Episode 82: A Crohn's Disease Patient Shares His Experiences with Homeopathy - An Interview by Jonathan Stallick
from Homeopathy 247 Podcast · host Homeopathy247
What is everyday life really like when Crohn's disease affects what you can eat, where you can go and how much energy you have? In this episode of the Homeopathy247 Podcast, Mary Greensmith speaks with experienced homeopath Jonathan Stallick and hears directly from his client Tim about his experience of living with Crohn's disease. The conversation explores severe digestive symptoms, food sensitivities, emotional wellbeing, individualized prescribing and Tim's personal experience during homeopathic care. Living With Crohn's Disease Tim describes becoming seriously unwell after an episode of dysentery in 2020 and later developing Crohn's disease. His symptoms included severe diarrhoea, bleeding, abdominal pain, exhaustion and significant food restrictions. At times, he says he needed to remain close to a toilet and found travelling, restaurants and visiting other people extremely difficult. When Food Becomes a Daily Worry One of the biggest effects on Tim's life was his restricted diet. He describes reactions to foods including citrus, tomatoes, dairy, eggs, lentils, chocolate, chilli and high fibre foods. Even small amounts of certain ingredients could, according to Tim, leave him feeling unwell for several days. This made eating socially particularly difficult. Trying Different Approaches Tim had previously studied homeopathy and later trained in herbalism and naturopathy. Before seeing Jonathan, he says he used slippery elm and other approaches to help manage some digestive symptoms. Jonathan uses this part of the story to discuss how different complementary approaches can have different aims and methods. Looking Beyond the Diagnosis Jonathan explains that within his homeopathic practice he considers more than the diagnosis of Crohn's disease. He looks at physical symptoms alongside the person's health history and emotional experiences. Tim discusses unresolved grief connected with the death of his grandmother and describes an intense emotional experience after one of Jonathan's prescriptions. Emotional wellbeing can influence quality of life, but grief or trauma should not be considered established causes of Crohn's disease. A Difficult Reaction Tim later describes experiencing several days of severe abdominal pain, cramping, sweating, exhaustion and palpitations after another homeopathic remedy. Jonathan interprets this through the traditional homeopathic concept of an aggravation or return of old symptoms. A worsening of Crohn's symptoms is not evidence that healing is occurring. Significant abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, dehydration or rapid deterioration requires appropriate medical assessment. Eating Previously Avoided Foods After this period, Tim reports gradually experimenting with foods that had previously caused problems. He describes eating lasagne, lentils, lemon and other foods without experiencing the severe reactions he had expected. He also talks about returning to restaurants, becoming more active and making plans to travel again. These are Tim's personal experiences. They cannot establish that homeopathy caused the improvement or treated the underlying Crohn's disease. An Individualized Approach Jonathan later discusses the remedies he selected and explains why prescribing is individualized. He specifically warns against assuming that one remedy should be used for everyone with Crohn's disease. Within his approach, several people with the same diagnosis could receive completely different remedies depending on their individual symptom pictures. Crohn's Disease and Medical Care Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that requires appropriate medical monitoring. Treatment may include medication, nutritional support, biologic therapies and, when medically necessary, surgery. Homeopathy has not been established as an effective treatment or cure for Crohn's disease and should not replace gastroenterology care. Key Takeaways Crohn's disease can greatly affect everyday life. Food restrictions were a major part of Tim's experience. Jonathan takes an individualized approach to case taking. Emotional wellbeing forms part of his homeopathic consultations. Tim reports significant changes during his care. Individual case experiences cannot demonstrate treatment effectiveness. Worsening symptoms should not automatically be interpreted as healing. Crohn's disease requires appropriate medical monitoring and treatment.
