This is the definition of an overuse injury—the slow accumulation of damage that never gets a chance to heal.The Overuse EpidemicThe injury data in youth sports is clear:ACL tears in young female athletes have skyrocketedLittle League elbow and shoulder injuries are at all-time highsStress fractures in runners and dancers are epidemicHip labral tears in hockey players are increasingly common—even in teenagersA landmark study in the American Journal of Sports Medicine found that young athletes who specialize in a single sport are 70 to 93 percent more likely to be injured than those who play multiple sports.Multi-sport athletes develop more balanced bodies. They load different tissues in different ways. Without it, you're building on sand.2. Movement VariabilityYour body thrives on varied movement. Playing multiple sports, cross-training, doing activities outside your primary sport—these all build more adaptable, resilient athletes.If you're a hockey player, play lacrosse in the summerIf you're a golfer, lift weights and do yogaIf you're a runner, swim and cycleYour primary sport will benefit from the variety, not suffer from it.3. Planned RecoveryRecovery isn't laziness. It's when adaptation happens.Your tendons don't get stronger while you're practicing. They get stronger in the 24 to 72 hours after practice, when your body is repairing and remodeling tissue.
