Episode 86: Let's Talk About the Remedies for Coughs with Dr. Varsha M. Khurana
from Homeopathy 247 Podcast · host Homeopathy247
A cough may sound simple, but when it comes to homeopathic prescribing, the smallest details can completely change the remedy being considered. In this episode of the Homeopathy247 Podcast, Mary Greensmith welcomes Dr. Varsha M. Khurana for a practical discussion about coughs and the many different symptom patterns homeopaths traditionally look for. Mary plays recordings of several different coughs while Dr. Varsha explains what she hears and, more importantly, what she would want to ask next. Why Are Coughs Difficult to Prescribe For? There are many remedies traditionally associated with coughs in homeopathic materia medica. Simply knowing that somebody has a dry, wet or rattling cough is usually not enough to narrow down the possibilities. Dr. Varsha explains why she wants to understand the entire symptom picture before considering a remedy. Listen to the Cough One of Dr. Varsha's first recommendations is to actually listen to the cough whenever possible. She considers details such as: Is it dry or wet? Does it sound rattling? Does the person cough once or several times together? Does the throat sound irritated? Is breathing affected? Does coughing cause pain? What is the person's posture while coughing? These observations may help distinguish between traditional remedy pictures. What Makes the Cough Better or Worse? Dr. Varsha emphasizes what homeopaths call modalities: the circumstances that change the symptoms. She asks whether the cough changes: During the day or night Indoors or outdoors When lying down After getting out of bed With movement With particular weather After warm or cold drinks Sometimes an unusual detail can be more useful than the cough itself. Don't Forget Thirst One simple question Dr. Varsha finds particularly useful is whether the person is thirsty. She uses Mercurius and Pulsatilla as an example of how two remedy pictures may share characteristics while differences such as thirst can help distinguish between them within traditional homeopathic prescribing. Belladonna and Bryonia Dr. Varsha discusses Belladonna as traditionally associated with a more sudden, intense cough picture. She also describes the traditional Bryonia picture as dry, painful and worse from movement, with the person wanting to remain still. These descriptions come from homeopathic materia medica and should not be interpreted as evidence that these remedies effectively treat coughs. Time of Day Can Matter When does the cough happen? Dr. Varsha explains that some traditional remedy pictures have very specific timing. She discusses Euphrasia in relation to coughs that are more noticeable during the daytime and another less commonly discussed remedy in relation to coughs that improve when lying down. Phosphorus and Other Remedy Pictures The episode also explores the traditional Phosphorus cough picture, including coughing associated with discomfort in the chest or abdomen and a desire for cold drinks. The wider lesson is not to choose a remedy from one symptom alone. Dr. Varsha continually returns to the importance of combining several distinctive details before making a homeopathic prescription. When a Cough Needs Medical Attention Coughs can have many causes, including viral infections, asthma, pneumonia, allergies, reflux and other respiratory conditions. Homeopathy has not been established as an effective treatment for coughs or respiratory infections. A persistent or worsening cough, difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing blood, high fever, significant weakness or concerning symptoms in a child should be medically assessed. Key Takeaways Don't describe every cough in the same way. Listen carefully to how the cough sounds. Ask what makes it better or worse. Notice the time of day and position. Thirst can help distinguish traditional remedy pictures. Pain and other accompanying symptoms matter. One symptom alone is rarely enough for homeopathic prescribing. Persistent or serious coughs need appropriate medical assessment.
