Episode 87 - A Goddess Story

from Candlelit Tales Irish Mythology Podcast · host Candlelit Tales

This month we are celebrating the Goddess Brigid and her feast day of Imbolc by releasing a month filled with Goddess stories. The first is one of the most ambiguous ones… as there are no written sources to find much about the Goddess who gave her name to the people we know as the Tuath de Dannan - the people of the Goddess Danu. Those that later became known as the “sidh”, the “good people”, and as time went by the “faeries”. More and more is forgotten about our old customs, language, and beliefs. And when you look for 'Danu' now, you might only find a line in the 12th-century book, An Leabhar Gabhala (the book of Invasions) that says "she is the Mother Goddess". If her stories were wiped out on purpose, then we have to try and stitch them back and re-knit the fabric of our lost traditions. In this episode, Sorcha relates what she does know about this mother goddess. And like the rivers and waters that took her name, all things flow from her. We pay tribute to the mother of all the Gods and Goddesses and when we praise any Goddess, and we pay homage to her memory. We will not forget their names.
