Episode 88 - Best In Show *Listener's Choice*
from In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil · host Andrew and Phil
A microcosm of American society is gently skewered in Christopher Guest's ensemble mockumentary about obsession with dogs. Guest's stock company of talented comedic actors carry this improv-heavy film, which was led by the success of "Waiting for Guffman" four years prior. "Best in Show" follows several different dog owners as they prepare for the Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show in Philadelphia. In the style of classic cinema verite' documentary, we follow each of the contestants through their preparation and appearance at the show, and are unaware as to which of them will win the top prize. Not only a parody of American canine fixation, the film is also a brilliant spoof of the modern documentary. The structure of "Best in Show" is extremely reverent to the tropes and trademarks of the contemporary non-fiction film, exposing it's familiarity and self-seriousness to all who have seen their share of cable television. Amy joins Andrew and Phil for the first time for this humor-filled discussion.
