Episode 88: Introducing Homeopathy and Self-Prescribing at Home with Mary Greensmith
from Homeopathy 247 Podcast · host Homeopathy247
With so many homeopathic remedies to choose from, how do you begin narrowing them down? In this solo episode of the Homeopathy247 Podcast, Mary Greensmith explains the traditional principles behind finding a homeopathic remedy for acute symptoms. She explores symptom gathering, modalities, unusual symptoms, repertories, materia medica, emotions, potency and dose, as well as the difference between a short term problem and something that keeps returning. Why One Symptom Isn't Enough One of the most common questions Mary hears is, "I have this symptom. What remedy should I take?" But within traditional homeopathic prescribing, there may be many remedies associated with the same general complaint. Instead of focusing on one symptom alone, Mary recommends collecting several distinctive details to build a fuller picture. Start With the Details Mary explains some of the information traditionally considered during homeopathic case taking: Where is the symptom? Does it extend anywhere else? What makes it better? What makes it worse? What time of day is it strongest? Did it begin suddenly or gradually? What other symptoms appeared at the same time? Is there anything unusual about how it feels? These details are then compared with traditional homeopathic remedy descriptions. What Are Modalities? Modalities describe what makes a symptom better or worse. Mary gives examples involving movement, fresh air, time of day, temperature and drinking. Within homeopathic materia medica, remedies are traditionally associated with different patterns. For example, one remedy picture may be worse from movement while another may be described as improving once movement begins. These are traditional homeopathic descriptions rather than scientifically established treatment effects. Look for Accompanying Symptoms Mary also discusses concomitants, meaning other symptoms happening at the same time. Something that initially appears unrelated may become useful when comparing several remedy pictures. The aim is to gradually narrow a large number of possibilities into a much smaller group for further consideration. Strange, Rare and Peculiar Symptoms Homeopaths traditionally place particular importance on unusual or very individual symptoms. Mary explains that common descriptions such as "sharp pain" can still relate to many remedies. More specific descriptions of exactly how the pain feels, when it occurs and what changes it can provide more information for traditional repertorisation. Repertory and Materia Medica Mary shows how a repertory is used to look up symptoms and identify remedies traditionally associated with them. Once several possibilities have been identified, a materia medica provides a fuller description of each remedy. This allows the homeopath or learner to compare the wider remedy picture rather than choosing from one symptom. Emotions and Individual Prescribing Mary also discusses how emotions and behaviour may be considered within homeopathic case taking. She gives traditional descriptions associated with remedies such as Arsenicum album, Pulsatilla and Sulphur. These personality descriptions belong to homeopathic materia medica and should not be treated as validated psychological classifications. Acute and Recurring Symptoms Mary distinguishes between a recent, short term complaint and a problem that repeatedly returns. Recurring symptoms may need more investigation rather than repeated self prescribing. Frequent cystitis, tonsillitis, headaches, pain or other recurring problems can have medical causes that deserve appropriate assessment. Potency and Dose Mary discusses the traditional homeopathic use of potencies such as 30C and higher potencies, as well as how homeopaths decide whether to wait, repeat or reconsider a remedy. These dosing principles belong to homeopathic practice and are not evidence based medical dosing guidelines. Homeopathy should not delay appropriate first aid or medical treatment. Burns, serious injuries, breathing problems, severe allergic reactions, significant bleeding, poisoning or rapidly worsening symptoms require appropriate medical care. Key Takeaways Don't choose a remedy from one symptom alone. Collect several distinctive details. Ask what makes symptoms better or worse. Note other symptoms happening at the same time. Specific descriptions can be more useful than broad ones. Repertories help organize traditional remedy possibilities. Materia medica provides a fuller remedy picture. Recurring symptoms may need professional assessment. Potency and repetition are part of traditional homeopathic prescribing.
