Episode 89: The Board Needs to See Your Executive Process. Not a Better Example
from Next-Level Ed Leadership Interview Prep · host Jonathan Royce
Try the Complimentary Decision Chain Analysis™You may not need a better superintendent interview example. You may need to make the executive process you already know easier for the board to see.In this episode of Executive Interview Intelligence™, we bring together all four elements of the Upgrade Formula™: Leadership Focus, Organizational Level, Governance Evidence, and Hiring Confidence. When an interview response doesn't feel strong enough, it's easy to assume the example is the problem. You start searching your career for a more difficult decision, a larger accomplishment, or an experience that sounds more superintendent-level.Sometimes replacing the example is appropriate. But sometimes the experience already contains exactly the leadership evidence the board needs. The problem is that too much of the executive process remains difficult to see.Using a real superintendent interview case study, we examine a candidate responding to a board question about holding an administrator accountable when behavior conflicted with district values or ethical expectations. The candidate describes addressing concerns directly, seeking the administrator's perspective, and using an existing relationship to work through the issue. Then we run that response through the complete Upgrade Formula™.What priority was driving the candidate's approach to accountability?Does the response show the organizational significance of holding a district leader accountable?Did governance genuinely play a role in this experience, or would mentioning the board manufacture evidence that wasn't actually there? And ultimately, does the response give the interview board enough evidence to predict how this candidate would handle administrator accountability as its superintendent? The case study demonstrates an important distinction: the candidate may already have the right experience. Strengthening the response doesn't require making that experience more dramatic. It requires identifying what the board still has to infer about the leadership behind it.After more than 250 hours analyzing superintendent interviews and studying over 200 real superintendent interview questions and candidate responses, the research continues to point toward the same conclusion:When a strong experience produces an unclear interview response, the solution may not be a better example. The board may need a clearer view of the executive process behind it.Most superintendent candidates prepare for interview questions.School boards are evaluating something else.
