Episode 9 - Beau Is Afraid (2023) - "The Horrors of Everyday Anxieties"
from I Didn’t Need To See That · host Peter Radwanski
Content Warning: Suicide, Intrusive Thoughts, Anxiety, PTSD On this weeks episode we’re joined by friend of the pod and Aaron’s lovely wife, Caroline Rayburn as we talk about the newest feature film by writer/director Ari Aster, “Beau Is Afraid”. Listen in while we commend what is arguably Aster’s funniest release today as well as what seems to be a long-awaited passion project of his. Even at a 3+ hour run time this movie still breezes by and comes with a strong recommend from each of us for it’s dark humor, inventive camerawork, ambitious storytelling, stellar acting all around, and just a downright bizarre experience of a film. However, we do lament that this film is one that hugely benefits from seeing it in theaters and with an audience, but likely didn’t stick around in theaters long enough to find it’s audience; while we do suspect that the target audience was; in fact, just Aster himself. Plus, Mommy issues galore, comparisons to Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” and “The Truman Show”, and the emerging trend of “Sad Guy Joaquin Phoenix”. This and more on “I Didn’t Need to See That!”
