We kick it off with this week’s current events: - Tax prep companies breached customers’ privacy by selling their sensitive financial and personal data to advertising companies like Google and Meta - Microsoft acquired Activision-Blizzard - Hollywood’s writers (WGA) and actors (SAG-AFTRA) unions have gone on - strike - The most recent American inflation report was released - Russia is facing budgetary gaps that it is looking to fill with windfall taxes on its companies - New data out of China shows a 12.4% YoY drop in exports, as well as some interesting insights about some of its trading partners - Q2 fundraising data has been released by the FEC with regards to the 2024 presidential election In this week’s book club, we discuss chapter 6 of Supreme Inequality, titled “Workers.” It’s about infringement upon workers’ rights by the Supreme Court to restrict workers from suing for different types of discrimination and weaken unions. In our deep dive, we discuss immigration. We cover America’s current immigration policy, whether immigration is helpful or harmful, and how we would look to adjust the policy.
