Episode 9 - The Aberfan Disaster

from Grievous Bodily Harm Podcast · host Karen Scaife

On The 21st of October, just after school had begun. A spoil tip from the coal mine above the village of Aberfan, in Wales, began to slide down the mountain and into the two schools below. The devastation was complete and the town, and country, were changed forever. It is one of the worst mining disasters the world has ever seen, and it still holds the record for the most devastating event, involving children, in UK history.  The story is heartbreaking but the frustration and grief the families felt was made worse by the lack of accountability of those who could have stopped it from happening in the first place. Corruption, government coverups and trauma abound in this story. We recorded this a while ago but held it back to come out just 4 days before the 59th anniversary of the fateful event.
