Episode 90 - Inherent Vice
from In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil · host Andrew and Phil
When Paul Thomas Anderson makes a film, you can expect it to be provocative, visually spectacular and full of amazing performances. And then you have 'Inherent Vice.' While PTA's films have gotten less kinetic over time (a gradual decrescendo from 'Magnolia') 'Inherent Vice' takes stillness to new heights. PTA's direction is clearly at the service of his screenplay, adapted from Thomas Pynchon's novel, so much so that the audience must sit through long, convoluted scenes consisting merely of two people talking. The plot is not important here, but it basically follows a classic detective story of a P.I. investigating the disappearance of a femme fatale. Phil and Andrew are scratching their heads a little on 'Inherent Vice'. Take a listen to their thoughts on this unexpected private eye comedy.
