She began training in an ancient Japanese martial art called Ninpo Tai Jutsu, the Art of the Ninja, at the tender young age of 47. But she did not go willingly. Her teacher was my acupuncturist, and it took him 3 years to get her on the mat. She told him that she would take a few classes just to prove how much she hated it. She didn't hate it. She fell in love with the art, the training, and she really fell in love with the sense of strength and empowerment she got from training. Ten years later she made dojo history by becoming my teacher's first female black belt. In 20 years of teaching he never had a woman achieve such a high rank.
