Episode 92: A Homeopathic Life on an Island with Mary Greensmith
from Homeopathy 247 Podcast · host Homeopathy247
What happens when you leave behind a familiar way of life and move to a tiny island with fewer than 2,000 residents? In this solo episode of the Homeopathy247 Podcast, Mary Greensmith shares an update on her move to the island of Alderney and what this new chapter means for her homeopathic and naturally minded lifestyle. From growing vegetables and sourcing local food to meeting neighbours, joining community groups and spending more time outdoors, Mary talks about creating a life that feels simpler, more connected and more sustainable. A Long Awaited Move Getting to Alderney wasn't quite as straightforward as Mary originally hoped. Her house sale fell through several times, the move was delayed for months and even transporting the family dog became another challenge. After all the uncertainty, Mary and her husband finally arrived on the island in the middle of winter and began settling into their new home. Life on a Tiny Island Alderney is only around three miles long and one and a half miles wide, with a population of fewer than 2,000 people. Mary describes beautiful beaches, coastal walks, dramatic tides and a strong sense of community. With fewer shops and deliveries taking longer, everyday life naturally encourages more planning and a different relationship with what you buy and use. Becoming More Self Sufficient One of Mary's biggest goals is to start growing more of her own food again. Having previously lived on a smallholding with cows, sheep, pigs and chickens, she is excited to return to some of those earlier values. Her new garden includes a greenhouse, established plants, a fig tree and even an olive tree, with plenty of space still waiting to be transformed. Local Food and Simple Living Mary and her husband are also looking forward to making greater use of locally produced food. The island has farms, vegetable growers and local fishing, creating opportunities to eat more seasonally and depend less on food brought in by ship. For Mary, this isn't about trying to live without modern conveniences. It is about becoming more conscious of where food comes from and making the most of what is available locally. Finding Community One of the biggest changes Mary notices is how easy it is to meet people. Neighbours stop to chat, people share resources and Facebook Marketplace items can disappear within minutes because somebody nearby needs them. Mary has already joined art and horticultural groups, while her husband has become involved with local activities too. Staying Connected Matters A holistic approach to wellbeing isn't only about food or exercise. Feeling connected with other people, having meaningful activities, spending time outside and being part of a community can all contribute to wellbeing. Mary talks about enjoying the ability to walk to meet people, spend time on the beach and become involved in local projects. Making the Island More Sustainable Mary is particularly interested in how island communities can become more self sufficient. She discusses locally grown food, recycling green waste into compost and wood chip, renewable energy possibilities and the potential for remote workers to bring new opportunities to the island. Creating a Naturally Minded Life For Mary, moving to Alderney feels like returning to many of the ideas she valued earlier in life. Growing food, spending time outside, knowing neighbours, reducing unnecessary consumption and taking part in community life are all becoming part of her everyday routine. Rather than seeing health as one isolated activity, this episode explores how our surroundings, relationships, routines and connection with nature can all form part of a wider approach to wellbeing.
