Episode 94 - Embracing imperfect advocacy with Hope Cotton

from Baskets Of Knowledge · host Prajesh Chhanabhai; Tane Whitehead

Imagine living in a world where you were unable to communicate as openly as you wanted, a world where people assume you can hear what they are saying but you can't. This is the world that this week's guest has had to navigate.   Hope Cotton, our guest this week speaks to us about growing up deaf. The impact of this was realised fully during the Covid-19 lockdowns when schools started to use online learning. The lack of captioning software at the time was highlighted. This has led Hope to be an advocate for the deaf community in so many ways. One mission that she is championing is a petition to make captioning mandatory on TV and all media videos. We speak about this and how this can change the world for the deaf community.   We also go into a number of areas that Hope is an advocate or a youth disrupter in. We speak about her relationship with her faith as it challenged her identity. This is a fantastic conversation that has not only delving into topics that matter but also some fantastic laughs.
