Welcome to the Tweed Trends Podcast. Hey, Evette, what's trending today? Hey, I'm Evette, hey girl! And you are tuned in to Tweed Trends.
It's the quickest way to find out what's trending today. Hey guys, welcome to another episode of Tweed Trends. Today's episode is all about paying for things. So let's get started.
When's the last time you thought about the Puerto Ricans and the whole destruction and devastation that Hurricane Maria brought to their island? Well, at this point, FEMA is saying, you know what, the emergency is over? We're gonna scale back our assistance. Because right now, they're at 100%.
They're helping the island completely with everything. The governor is saying, no, you need to continue at 100% because we still have a lot of stuff to do, including power restoration, debris cleanup, and other type recovery efforts. FEMA on the other hand is like, nope, we're going to 90%, you cover 10%, and they're estimating that 10% to be about $100 million. It's like, okay, in my mind, I'm wondering, does the island have that kind of money?
Does the government have that kind of money considering the type of devastation that everybody had there? It kind of seems a little far-fetched to believe that they could cover 10% at this point in time, considering that some places are just getting power back, and it's been 11 months. So either way, we're gonna keep an eye on this, because the FEMA officials are saying, this is a good sign, we're in a recovery phase, and the Puerto Rican government is like, nope, y'all have done us dirty this whole time, it should not have taken this long, and you're treating us like second-class citizens, but yet, hey, we are American citizens. So I don't know, we're gonna have to see what they do.
Looks like Congress may have to get involved in this. So let's just keep an eye out. More on millions. The Defense Department is postponing the big humongous military parade that President Trump wants to have.
Instead of having it this federal and say, it's gonna be pushed back to sometime next year, sometime in 2019. The reason being is that the price tag on this parade is outrageous. They are reporting that it's gonna be about $92 million to have this big military parade. And not to mention, the American Legion was seriously against this whole idea to begin with.
So, I'm thinking about this. $92 million for parade? To watch people walk by? To wave?
I doubt they throw candies in the military. $92 million? How about this? Let's take that $92 million that we would consider putting towards a parade and maybe spend that on, how about some veterans maybe?
Yeah, makes sense, right? But I don't know, maybe some things make too much sense. Okay, and so finally on a money topic that makes sense, that I think they should do all over the globe everywhere. Parents, hold on to your seats.
New York University School of Medicine is going to pay the tuition of all of its students. Did you hear me? All of the students, regardless of merit or financial need, they're gonna pay it all. So, this would make them the first major American medical school to do so.
So, when I say all of them, I mean all of them. So, if you're there already, they're gonna pay for it. If you're there and you already paid money, they're gonna give you a refund. If you are headed there, they're gonna pay for it.
It makes so much sense. And they're saying that it's mainly because of the fact that when kids go to school and go to med school, all of the student debt that they accumulate over that time period is atrocious. And this way, they're like, if you don't have to focus and concentrate and worry about the money all the time, then maybe we can get more people in the medical field. They're saying that there are some lower paying specialties that people are opting not to go towards because they're saying, I'm gonna have this much student debt.
Therefore, I need to go, I need to be a neurosurgeon. I need to be doing something that's paying big bucks. I can't be an OBGYN because they make maybe a third of what a neurosurgeon would make. And they're just like, okay, I gotta go big.
I can't be a pediatrician. I gotta be an orthopedic surgeon. And so NYU, medical school is saying, you know what? Stop worrying about that.
