Episode 95: Myths of the Music Industry

“Question the source.” There are a lot of preconceptions surrounding the music industry that can make it seem daunting to enter into the field for your career. In this episode, we’re debunking some of these myths that might be holding you back: Myth #1: Before you can build a music career, you have to be the best performer “Still go forth and do the thing, even if we are in a refining process.” Myth #2: It’s all about the music “These are all learned skills [communication, networking, marketing]. Just like you learn the concerto or you learn the etude or you learn how to be in a chamber group, the same thing goes for marketing.” Myth #3: The poor artist / starving musician “There’s so many different ways to diversify our portfolios. We are so multifaceted already as musicians.” Myth #4: Following the road most traveled is the only way to ‘make it’ “Trust the process and what it is that you truly desire to do.” A lot of our challenges with what success is and how we can achieve it is fighting all of these preconceived notions.
