Episode 97 - A Most Violent Year

    Screenwriting 101: Wanna create a character who is able and moral?  Name them Abel Morales!  That's exactly what Oscar-nominated word-jockey J.C. Chandor has done for the main character in this period drama set in New York City.  "A Most Violent Year" is about Señor Morales (a charismatic Oscar Isaac), a noble immigrant trying to run a legitimate heating oil company in what is on record as one of the most violent years in the history of NYC.  Along with his Lady Macbeth-like moll (a highly praised turn by Jessica Chastain) Abel must contend with thugs hijacking his trucks on the Queensboro bridge,  police busting their kids' birthday party, attempted burglary, Albert Brooks, cutthroat orthodox Jew businessmen and my personal favorite: a breathless car chase and foot pursuit scene worthy of "The French Connection."  Chandor's film is talky, but consistently interesting and fine performances abound.  Phil and Andrew have a good time with this one.
